how we were known

From John to Jarvis, Ellen to Euxonosinia, our names contribute to our individual and cultural identities. Using the full records of the Cortland Rural Cemetery, this piece organizes first names by first letter (all names starting with the same letter are clustered together), frequency of name in records (indicated by size of corresponding circle), and length of first name (indicated by color, from two letters as red cooling to purple's eleven letters). This piece is on permanent display at the Cortland Rural Cemetery.
